Credit Reports

What is a credit report?

Your consumer credit report contains a record of your credit payment history. Banks and other extenders of credit legally permitted to review your credit report to determine whether or not to grant you credit. The information in your consumer credit report comes directly from the companies you do, and have done, business with.

The information is collected and compiled by credit bureaus. There are three credit bureaus in the United States: Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union. There are also 3 serving Canada: Trans Union, Equifax, and Northern Credit Bureaus, Inc. Although many national lending institutions report consumer credit information to all three, smaller banks and other credit grantors may report to only one-or even none. Therefore, your credit report from one credit bureau is not necessarily exactly the same as your credit report from another.

Why is having a credit report important?

You should know what is contained in your credit report. You may be rejected for credit on the basis of negative information in that report. Negative information stays on file for 7 years, whether or not it is accurate. You have a right to dispute inaccurate information. Furthermore, if your credit is less than perfect, having a credit report done will show you exactly where you stand, and put you in a better position to improve your standing.
